Preparing Hearts and Minds for the Coming of the Messiah

Brief thoughts on a Bible topic or passage

For His Name’s Sake – Part Three

“Help us O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name, and deliver us and purge away our sins, for your names sake.” Psalms 79:9

As we continue to walk in the paths of righteousness, hand in hand with Jesus our Shepard, He shows us that He is the God of our salvation and He helps us for the glory of His name.

God is glorified when He helps His children as they walk with Him.

But notice, He delivers us from our sins and He purges away our sins for His name’s sake. These are two different things.

For His Name’s Sake – Part Two

“…he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
Psalms 23:3

If I am a follower of Jesus, then He has placed His name upon me, and He desires that I walk in THE paths that properly result in reflecting His character & glory through me as I walk those paths with Him.

He is righteous. He will only walk in righteous paths. He asks us to walk with Him. And so we each must ask ourselves, “Am I on a righteous path with Jesus, or on another path?”

“The highway of the upright is to depart from evil…” Proverbs 16:17

“By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.” Proverbs 16:6

If we are walking with the Lord, we will be departing from evil. If we say we are a Christian, a follower of Jesus, and continue in the paths of evil, we are deceiving ourselves and bringing shame upon His name.

For His Name’s Sake – Part One

“…he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
Psalms 23:3

For the benefit of His name, as it represents His character and glory, He leads me (provided I am following) in THE paths of righteousness (as opposed to other paths that are NOT of His righteousness).

He leads me. Jesus does not point me to the paths of righteousness, or just give me instructions on how to find them, but He leads me Himself. He takes each of us by the hand and says, “Follow me.” He does not leave us to walk these paths alone, but says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Heb 13:5) and “I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matt 28:20) He leads us in the paths of righteousness to the Father. No one comes to the Father except Jesus leads them. (John 14:6)
